Sometimes your physiotherapist will refer you to our specialist Rehabilitation Instructors who work within the physiotherapy team across our sites providing gym based rehabilitation tailored to your needs.
Our rehabilitation instructors have a vast knowledge and skill set that will help and support you to improve your current condition, strength, and movement.
They will use their expertise to help develop and agree specific exercise plans for you to follow both in the gym and at home.
Working with our rehabilitation instructors will help to keep you on track. They can help develop knowledge of your condition and build your confidence in managing it.
How long will it take to see improvements?
It is normal for it to take some time (weeks to months as opposed to days to weeks) to see a change in your muscles and your movement, and strength improve.
What will happen in the Rehabilitation Instructor appointment once you have been referred?
In your initial appointment you will meet your rehabilitation instructor, agree goals to work on and discuss what you will need to do to achieve them.
During further appointments, you will review what you have been doing so far in your exercise plan. You will work with your rehabilitation instructor to adapt your plan to maintain progress towards your goals.
What to wear, what to expect and what to bring?
You are coming into a gym environment so please try to wear loose fitting clothing that is comfortable to exercise in.
Wearing sports trainers would be best, where possible. However, if you don’t have any, please wear comfortable, supportive shoes that have a non-slip bottom.
It is also advisable you bring a bottle of water with you.
Please avoid wearing:
• flip flops/sandals/open footwear
• heels
• revealing clothing
What types of exercise rehabilitation sessions do you
run?
One-to-one sessions
You will typically work through your existing exercise plan, reviewing your progress, and agreeing any changes needed to continue your journey.
You will then be booked in for another appointment, as required. This could be another one to one or a group session.
Exercise classes/function rehabilitation class
The class size is around 6 to 8 patients. Each person will have an individual exercise plan developed in your initial appointment before you’re invited to a class.
During the class you will work through your individualised exercise plan. The rehabilitation instructor will always be present to discuss any issues/concerns, help you progress your exercises and monitor your technique. You will likely use a range of different exercise equipment, but the rehabilitation instructor will ensure you know how to use it.
At the end of this class you may be invited to attend an exercise referral scheme at a local gym, to maintain the improvements you have gained from the class. Find out more on what's available in your area here.
